A week of slip-ups from public figures

Ever said something you didn’t mean to say? Ever hit “reply-all” on an email by accident? Ever do anything really, really dumb? Well, you’re in good company, especially this week. Several high-profile gaffes led to embarrassing moments for celebrities, who, frankly, should have known better.

Ann Curry mix-up
On “The Today Show,” Ann Curry is a much respected interviewer and host. But during her commencement speech at Wheaton College in Massachusetts, the television journalist committed an epic gaffe when she mentioned several of the school’s illustrious alums. The problem was that many of the people she mentioned, including Billy Graham, Wes Craven, and Dennis Hastert, went to a different Wheaton College. Ms. Curry apologized for the “mortifying” error, but once word of her mistake hit the Web, searchers were off to the races. Web lookups on “ann curry speech,” “ann curry wheaton speech,” and “ann curry mistake” all soared like a well-tossed mortarboard. Additionally, a blog from Yahoo! News captured nearly a thousand votes.

A royal ransom
Who knew a member of England’s royal family could act like a corrupt building inspector? This past week, Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson found herself in hot water when she was videotaped soliciting a bribe from an undercover journalist. In the video, which quickly soared to the top of Yahoo’s highest searches, the redheaded duchess suggests to the journalist (disguised as a businessperson) that if he were to give Ms. Ferguson a princely sum (around $750,000), she would arrange for access to her ex-husband, Prince Andrew. The duchess has since apologized for her poor judgment, and will have an opportunity for even more groveling when she goes on “Oprah” next week. During the past week, searches on Fergie soared over 4,000%.

American Idol’s ‘Kanye moment’
The ninth season of “American Idol” came to an end this week, but the most memorable moment of the night wasn’t when Lee DeWyze was declared the winner. No, it came when a maniacal looking Ian Benardo (from season 7) grabbed the microphone from comedian Dane Cook and yelled out, “Who cares? It’s all about Ian Benardo tonight! I’m going to replace you, Simon Cowell! No one has a thing to say about you, just me.” Sometimes unscripted moments are funny. This one was just bizarre. Confused viewers quickly took to the Yahoo! Search box to learn more about the weird incident. Web lookups on “ian benardo” and “ian benardo weirdo” spiked, though probably for the last time, as we can’t imagine he’ll be invited back to the hit show anytime soon.
