Are you or a loved one sick and worried
you might have H1N1 Flu?

During flu season this year, you might have to wait a long time in a crowded waiting room before you can see your doctor or be seen in an Emergency Room. Some people with the flu need to be seen right away. Other people can often take care of themselves at home just fine. This information may help you better understand the flu and what people like you should do.

This information is not a substitute for your doctor’s advice. The H1N1 Flu Self-Evaluation was developed in collaboration with the Emory University School of Medicine and is here to help you understand the flu symptoms you or your family member may be having so that you can make your own health decisions.

This website has short series of questions that will help you decide if you need to see a doctor for symptoms that might be caused by the flu. Severity Assessment
Have you had a fever or felt feverish? If you
are taking aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, answer yes?

Do you have a cough and/or a sore throat?, answer yes?

Is it very hard to breathe, or do you feel very short
of breath since you got sick? answer yes?

Since you got sick, do you have a new pain or pressure
in your chest that was NOT there before?
(Don’t count pain you have from coughing). answer yes?

People who answer like this did might be very sick. They should:

* Call their doctor now.
* Tell their doctor they might be very sick.
* Ask if they need to be seen right now.
* If they need to be seen right now, ask their doctor where to go (doctor’s office, walk-in clinic or the emergency room).
* When they see the doctor, ask if they need medicine for the flu.

Those who can’t reach their doctor should go to the emergency room or walk-in (or urgent care) clinic right away.

Those who think they have an emergency should call 9-1-1.
